The time is finally right for this. I tried to make this move from Silicon Valley to a much more affordable location, taking my consulting business and SV clients with me. They said they would be happy to keep me on retainer even if I moved out of the state. It was during the Dot Com boom.

We had two offers on properties there literally right before the whole market collapsed. The startups I was advising closed their doors almost overnight. My client base in the Valley dried up. Luckily, the homeowners had countered our initial offers and we were able to drop out of the negotiations.

Today, it’s a lot easier to work remotely and I’m doing it again. The supporting tools and services are definitely more reliable.

It does still make sense to diversify your client base globally and your income streams, though. This insulates you from any local economic issues.
