Great article! I spent 20+ years working in Silicon Valley Tech and now I’m a leadership coach and career advisor still working primarily with leaders in Tech. These are good people who are frustrated with how the system rewards and promotes the folks who get results even if it requires ruthless, manipulative behavior.
If companies invested in their leadership development even a fraction of the millions and millions they spend on tech infrastructure we’d be in a much better place.
We need more leaders who behave like decent human beings.
Treating their employees with compassion and caring about their long-term wellbeing and career development. Treating their customers with respect vs. seeing them as a faceless mass from which to extract financial value.
I know that there are a number of leaders who want to find ways to balance getting results with also being a great leader for their people. They just don’t have the right role models. They aren’t being shown the way.
My partners and I are doing what we can from where we are in our own careers now. We’re providing 1-on-1 leadership coaching and larger leadership development workshops. But, this movement will need to take place at scale for change to happen within the broader industry.
